О месте

Perched atop a steep and rugged hill, Volissos Castle is a historic Byzantine monument rising above the village of Volissos in northwestern Chios Island. Built in the 11th century to protect the island's northwestern region, the castle was restored and reinforced by the Genoese in the mid-15th century. The structure boasts the unique features of Byzantine military architecture and offers significant testimony to the region's rich history. Visitors particularly appreciate the panoramic views from the castle, which embrace the village and the surrounding coastline. The site is wheelchair accessible, and admission is free. While some paths require caution due to a fire in August 2023, the castle remains open to visitors. Volissos Castle offers a unique atmosphere for history and nature enthusiasts and is one of Chios Island's most valuable treasures waiting to be explored.
