О месте

Apolichnon Castle is a historic archaeological site located on a hill northwest of Armolia village, in the Mastichochoria (Mastic Villages) region of Chios Island, Greece. Built in 1440 by the Genoese Nikolaos Banka Ioustiniani, the castle presents an impressive example of medieval architecture with its trapezoidal layout, double outer walls, and 62 rooms within. In addition to the main tower, the structure features corner defensive towers and a water reservoir equipped with a rainwater harvesting system, forming an important link in the island's historical defense communication network.

The castle is reached via a natural path, approximately 800 meters long, starting from Armolia village square and winding through olive groves and mastic trees. This walk takes about half an hour and can generally be completed without difficulty. Upon reaching the summit, the panoramic views encompassing the plains of Kalamoti and Armolia, surrounding islands, and the sea offer unforgettable scenes for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers. The site welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds, including those using wheelchairs, and admission is completely free.
