The Old Stone Houses District is Alaçatı's most iconic corner, powerfully reflecting its spirit and historical identity through its narrow cobblestone streets, bougainvillea-draped windows, and distinctive architecture. Housing distinguished examples of 19th-century Greek architecture, this district is considered one of the best-preserved historical settlement areas on Turkey's Aegean coast. The houses, built from the region's unique white tuff stone known as 'Alaçatı stone,' offer a cool living environment in summer and a warm one in winter. Blue, green, or white painted wooden bay windows add color and character to the streets. The vast majority of these protected structures have undergone faithful restorations, transforming them into charming boutique hotels, cafes, and shops. Along Kemalpaşa Street, the district's main thoroughfare, famous restaurants and design shops can be found, while the Hacı Memiş Neighborhood continues to preserve its local character with antique dealers and art workshops. The Pazaryeri Mosque, which formerly served as a church, showcases the district's multicultural and layered history through its intricate mosaics and stone craftsmanship. Located on Sakarya Street in Alaçatı, within İzmir province's Çeşme district, Pazaryeri Mosque stands as one of Alaçatı's most distinctive historical landmarks. Constructed in 1874 by architect Yuhannis Halopas, the building was originally opened as the Church of Ayios Konstantinos. It is also referred to as the 'Church of Mary' in honor of Saint Mary. As one of three major churches built for the local Greek population, its survival as the sole remaining church makes it exceptionally valuable, both architecturally and historically. Following the declaration of the Republic, the building was converted into a mosque. Remarkably, this transformation was carried out with great care to preserve the church's original character, allowing two faiths to coexist under one roof. The building features a three-nave basilical plan, constructed using rubble stone masonry. Its vaulted superstructure is topped with a barrel roof over the central nave and lean-to roofs over the side naves. A two-story narthex, complete with galleries, partially extends into the north and south naves. The original iconostasis has been carefully preserved, while a mihrab (prayer niche) was added facing south. A cut-stone minaret with a single balcony, accessible from the exterior, was a later addition. Extensive restoration work, led by the Alaçatı Municipality between 2009 and 2010, brought to light hidden icons, religious depictions, and the original altar section. Today, the building serves both as an active place of worship and a vibrant cultural heritage site, welcoming visitors free of charge.
